Somewhere, somehow in the past 10 months post grad, I was supposed to pick up years and years of wine knowledge. Gone are the days of boxes and Barefoot. Instead, I’m expected to understand why the hell you swirl your wine, smell it, and then take a sip. I would put mad cash on 90% of people not actually knowing what they are doing when they do that. Fake it until you make it, am I right?
What I’ve learned: You swirl wine for various reasons. Mostly what it does is expose bottled up wine to the air. Ok, big deal, but you know that scene in Aladdin. The one where Genie pops out of the lamp. He floats out and all of this color erupts and personality takes over the screen.
“10,000 years will give you such a crick in the neck.”
That’s kind of what happens when you swirl and let your wine sit for a little bit. A brilliant flavor erupts. It just requires oxygen.
As for smell, well, it gives you a preview of what you’re drinking. Had I known this prior to drinking the bottle, I would’ve smelled hints of apple, pear and vanilla. But tbh I picked up the bottle only because I liked the label. Fortunately I discovered that I love the wine so it was a win-win for me.
Not only is it Wine Wednesday but it is also Hump Day. Since I have been on the struggle bus rolling out of bed this week… I leave you with this Buzzfeed Vid:
